Harish HANDE

Harish Hande was born in the region of Karnataka in India, but spent most of his youth in the city of Rourkela, in the state of Orissa. After high school, he was admitted to the Indian Institute of Technology, moving on to the University of Massachusetts where he delved further into sustainable development and delivering electricity to rural areas

It was during a trip to the Dominican Republic that Harish Hande came up with the idea that solar energy could be a solution for the disadvantaged regions of his native country. With a friend, he founded the Solar Electric Light Company (SELCO), with the goal of making basic electricity services accessible and affordable for Indians living in rural areas.
